Myah's Birth Story

We went in for a non-stress May 5, 2016 at 10am. The nurse told me myahs movements in the beginning of the test were great but that she was not moving like she was suppose to be, and I needed to be sent to triage for more monitoring. We went down to triage and was hooked up to the monitors. I was having contractions the whole time. Four hours passed by and the nurse came into check on me i was three centimeters dilated, we were told to take a walk get something to eat and come back in an hour. We had lunch and walked as much as we could before having to go back to triage. Once we got back to triage we were told if i was dilated anymore i would be admitted and need to stay until i had myah. Well lo and behold i was four and a half centimeters dilated. So the process began, I admitted into labor and delivery. I'm not sure what time we finally got there but i was glad we did. We thought myah was going to be a cinco de mayo baby! I was having really bad contractions in my lower back, and boy oh boy did they hurt! I decided to jump in the shower and let the hot water hit my back. That helped but once i got out it started again. My mom decided it would be good to try and take a walk down the hallway. That did not work, i had to made it across the hall but not before having multiple contractions. We finally got back to our room. The nurse asked if i wanted to try a yoga ball which i said yes, i was in so much pain i was willing to try anything! This went on until 7am! The new nurse came in and asked if i wanted an epidural and i said no, i wanted everything to be as natural as it could be. As time went on i was in even more pain the doctors checked me and i was only at nine centimeters, at that point i had been at nine for, four hours. I was exhausted and i could see my wife was too. After 10 hours of being in pain i finally gave in and got an epidural. I don't understand what took me so long it instantly took away the pain. Not all of it but i was no longer screaming from the pain. Six more hours went by and the doctor came in to check me and i was finally at ten centimeters. We had been informed before it was time to have myah but that we would be having her in the operating room due to the fact that the nicu staff would need to be there to make sure that she was ok and did not need any extra help. We went back to the operating room at 10am May 6, 2017 i pushed for an hour and Myah was born at 11:00 am weighing 7lbs 3oz, 19 1/2 inches long. I was so glad she was finally here. The doctors checked myah and said there was nothing considering and that i could take her back to my room. We cuddled and had some family time. Nurses came in to take blood to test her chromosomes. We could by some of Myahs features that she indeed had Down syndrome, but we were awaiting the blood results to insure that it was not genetic.

How we found out Myah would most likely have Down Syndrome

When we were 12 weeks pregnant we had an ultrasound done. The doctor came in and also gave me an ultrasound which i found weird because doctors don't normally do ultrasounds. Once he was finished he said that baby showed some markers of having Down Syndrome and that i should get tested for it. We had already decided prior to this day that we did not want any testing done we would love our baby regardless. Well we were scared so we agreed to have a blood test done. I got a phone call about a week later from a nurse who worked at the hospital. She informed me that my blood test came back that my baby had a 100% chance of having Down Syndrome. I was so confused, how could just a simple blood test tell you this. The nurse had asked me four times, yes four times if i wanted to terminate my pregnancy. Of course i said no. She asked me if i wanted to get an amniocentesis done i said no but that we would need to talk about it. We opted out on having the amniocentesis done because of the m

Our crazy weekends

Angelica and i both work on the weekends so it gets pretty hard. Our day starts off with waking up around 7:30-8:30 am we brush our teeth and Myahs teeth and head to the living room. I turn on our projector and put on either YouTube learning videos or of course her favorite movie Moana. Myah watches tv while i make coffee and breakfast. After breakfast I usually get Myah dressed for the day. We just relax until its time for me to go into work. At 11am i try to see if Myah is interested in nursing and if she is i will nurse her. Around 11:15am i start to  get my lunch packed and get myself dressed to go into work, I work from noon until 8pm.  Before i leave for work i try to put Myah down for her first nap. We don't put Myah in daycare so I'm either with her or Angelica is, we work around each others work schedule to make it happen. Myah will wake up from her nap after about an hour to an hour and a half. Angelica will feed her lunch and clean her up and put in the living ro

It's normal

If you get the Down syndrome diagnosis it's normal to be scared and full of emotions. Because you have that "what if" in your mind, but don't be afraid you're child is able to do anything they put their mind to. It will just take them a little longer to learn but the scenic route is the best route.  Don't believe doctors when they tell you that your child will not have a great quality of life, let your child be the one to show you how great there life can be. You can't possibly know how great your unborn child's life can be until they're brought into this world. Of course your scared who wouldn't be you had a picture of the perfect healthy child in your head, your child is still perfect they are in fact extra perfect. Just because your child has down syndrome does not mean that they are down. There is nothing down about down syndrome. Myah is the light of our days she has so much love in her and her smile is heart warming, it can make a bad
